West Hartford, CT Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 177-20C allows walls or fences up to seven feet in height, measured above the adjoining finished grade, only within a required side or rear yard; minor grade variations under one foot do not change that measurement, except for underground parking facilities addressed separately in Section 177-32E. Between the building line and the street line, Subsection D generally bars structures altogether, but D(1) carves out an exception for a wall or fence no more than four feet high and no more than half solid, meaning a taller or more solid front-yard fence needs a variance from the Zoning Board of Appeals under Section 177-49.

Separately, Section 177-24 protects sightlines at corners and curves: no fence, hedge, bush, tree or billboard may be erected, maintained or planted that obstructs a clear view of drivers, and within 12 feet of the intersecting street lines bordering a corner lot, nothing may exceed three feet above the street grade. These three limits work together: a corner lot's side fence must satisfy both the seven-foot side-yard cap and the three-foot visibility-triangle cap near the intersection. The Zoning Enforcement Officer administers all of Chapter 177, including these yard and visibility rules, and can order a noncompliant fence altered or removed.
