Yuba City, CA Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Sec. 5904 sets the core residential rule: the maximum height of walls, fences, and hedges is three feet in any required front yard or street side yard and six feet in any other required yard for one- and two-family residences, unless another part of the chapter provides otherwise. Height is measured under Sec. 5902(a) from the finish level of the ground beneath the fence on the property required to provide it. Beyond the yard-based limits, Sec. , no wall, fence, hedge, sign, shrubbery, mound of earth, or other visual obstruction may exceed 30 inches above the nearest street curb elevation, protecting the sightlines of drivers and pedestrians entering or exiting a property or intersection.

Outside that triangle but still within a required front or street side yard, the general limit rises slightly to 36 inches for the same category of obstructions, with narrow exceptions for utility poles, official traffic signs, and trees trimmed to keep a seven-foot clearance above sidewalks and 14 feet above adjacent rights-of-way. A fence taller than these limits is not automatically prohibited: Sec. 5903 allows an exception through a use permit under Sec. 7003. Multi-family, commercial, and industrial properties follow a different, often mandatory, wall standard under Sec. 5905, including a required six-foot masonry wall where those uses abut single-family residential zoning.
