Front-yard fences are capped at 3 feet (or 4 feet if the top portion is at least 25% transparent lattice). Interior side and rear-yard fences may not exceed 8 feet, and any fence over 7 feet requires a Building Permit.
Yuba City Municipal Code Title 8, Chapter 5, Article 59 (Fences, Walls, Hedges and Intersection Visibility) governs fence heights citywide. In required front yards and corner-side yards, fences, hedges, and freestanding walls are limited to 3 feet, but may be placed at the back of the sidewalk at 4 feet if the top one foot (or the entire fence) achieves at least 25 percent transparency through open or lattice design. Along interior side and rear yard boundaries, fences may not exceed 8 feet unless additional height is needed for noise attenuation supported by a noise analysis, or in non-residential zones with a documented security need approved by the Planning Director. Per the City's building permit guidance, fences not over 6 feet high are exempt from a building permit, but any fence taller than 7 feet must be permitted through the Development Services Building Division.
Fence-height violations are enforced as zoning code violations under Title 8. Yuba City Code Β§1-7.01 establishes that violations of any city ordinance are infractions punishable by fines of $100 (first), $200 (second within one year), and $500 (each additional within one year), or may be charged as misdemeanors. Code Enforcement typically issues a courtesy notice first and requires the fence to be lowered or removed within a stated cure period before fines accrue.
