Dearborn Heights, MI Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Sec. 13-7 flatly prohibits constructing or maintaining a barbed wire or razor wire fence in any zoning district in the city, and it also bars attaching or fastening barbed or razor wire to any fence or fence post in any manner. Sec. 13-4(a) separately bars building a fence from old or used material, and 13-4(b) narrows acceptable material to four-foot chain link, shadow plank, ornamental iron, vinyl fencing system (PVC) or hedge and plantings, or the six-foot versions of those same materials. Sec. 13-4(c) requires matching hardware, a chain-link fence to a metal post, a wooden fence to a wooden post, and a PVC vinyl fence to vinyl posts, and 13-4(d) bars bolting or lashing a new fence to an existing one.

Sec. 13-4(e) requires posts sunk forty-two inches below grade in concrete or a comparable material, and 13-4(f) requires a wooden privacy fence to look identical on both sides so the finished face is not aimed only at the erecting owner's own yard. Sec. 13-4(g) bars any fence placement that obstructs the view of vehicular or pedestrian traffic, and 13-6 separately prohibits spikes, nails or other sharp-pointed projections on a fence unless the zoning board of appeals approves fancy decorative spikes.
