La Porte, TX Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

The City of La Porte regulates fence materials through its zoning ordinance and building code. In residential zoning districts, barbed wire, razor wire, concertina wire, and electric fences are prohibited. These materials may only be used in commercial or industrial zones where specifically permitted. Chain-link fencing may be restricted in front yards depending on the zoning district and any applicable deed restrictions. Fences must be constructed of durable, weather-resistant materials appropriate for the Gulf Coast climate, including treated wood, vinyl, ornamental metal, masonry, or composite materials. Temporary construction fencing, plywood, corrugated metal, and salvaged materials are generally not permitted as permanent fencing in residential areas. Fences constructed of natural materials such as bamboo or living hedges may be subject to height limitations. All materials must be installed with the finished or decorative side facing outward toward the street or neighboring property in the front yard.
