Lenexa, KS Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Table 1 in Section 4-1-B-24-F-5-b of the Lenexa Unified Development Code lists the materials allowed by fence type. For a fence or non-retaining wall on residential property, the allowed materials are wood, aluminum, steel, wrought iron, PVC, chain-link (without slats), masonry, stone and concrete. Barbed wire is treated as a separate Security Fence type. In the AG district, barbed wire fencing for agricultural purposes needs no permit and can reach 8 feet, located anywhere on the property. In the BP-1, BP-2 and BP-S districts, barbed wire needs a permit, can reach 18 feet, and goes on top of fences with a 6 foot minimum height, limited to 3 horizontal strands.

In all other zoning districts barbed wire needs a permit and Planning Commission approval in conjunction with a site plan or Special Use Permit. Razor wire is prohibited. The only electric fence type in the table is the underground electric fence, allowed in all zoning districts without a permit and located anywhere on the property. General construction standards in Section 4-1-B-24-F-5-a-2 also apply to every type: materials must be durable and suitable for year-round outdoor conditions, posts must be set in concrete footings with a minimum depth of 18 inches, and the finished side must face outward with supporting elements on the inside, unless the Community Development Director waives the finished-side rule where topography, vegetation or site conditions screen the fence from the neighbor.

The Planning Commission and the Director can approve deviations from strict compliance based on the purpose and intent of the Code, impact on adjacent properties, safety, unique site conditions, design quality and neighborhood character.
