Long Branch, NJ Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Section 345-41F of the zoning ordinance names the specific fence types Long Branch will not allow: barbed-wire fences, sharp-pointed fences, canvas fences, cloth fences, electrically charged fences, and temporary fences, a category the code illustrates with snow fences, expandable fences and collapsible fences. The ban applies "at any location on the lot upon which a dwelling or structure is situated," so it reaches the entire residential or improved lot, not just the front or street-facing side. The prohibition sits in the same section as Long Branch's height limits, corner-visibility rule and maintenance standard, and it works alongside subsection E's narrow exception allowing an open wire fence up to eight feet on public park, playground or school property, a carve-out that does not extend to private residential or commercial lots.

Because the ban targets material and fence type rather than height, a fence built to the correct height in feet can still violate § 345-41F if it uses a banned material, such as an electric livestock-style wire or a canvas privacy screen sold as a temporary fence.
