Lower Merion, PA Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Section 155-3.7D governs fence and wall materials township-wide, tying permitted types to Table 3.7.2, Fence Type by District, and Table 3.7.2.A, Fence and Wall Regulations by Type and Location. Permitted materials include wood and open fences, metal and iron, stone, brick and masonry, composite, and vinyl, with the specific type (masonry wall, open fence, estate fence, estate fence with masonry base, wood solid fence, vinyl fence, chain link, or deer fence) further limited by zoning district under Table 3.7.2. Five categories are specifically prohibited everywhere in the Township regardless of district: electric, barbed wire, razor wire, hog wire, rolled wire, fence spikes, or other hazardous fencing types; any wire smaller than 12 gauge and wire mesh fencing generally; galvanized or painted metal wire fencing; plastic fencing; and unfinished concrete masonry unit, meaning bare cinder block.

Supporting posts and structural members must face the inside of the fence with the smooth or finished face outward, and fence material along any one frontage is limited to a single type. These material rules apply on top of the height and configuration standards in Section 155-3.7B and C, so a compliant fence must satisfy both the district's allowed type from Table 3.7.2 and the townshipwide material ban in subsection D.
