Fence materials in Miami Beach must comply with Miami-Dade County Code Section 33-11 and the High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) requirements of the Florida Building Code. Acceptable materials include wood, vinyl, wrought iron, aluminum, concrete block, stucco-finished masonry, and chain link. Chain link fences must be 2-inch chain link or diamond weave nonclimbable type with top rail, made of heavy galvanized material. Chain link is only permitted behind the front building line. Cloth, fabric, canvas, and other materials affixed to fences must be properly maintained and may not create visual blight. Barbed wire and razor wire are prohibited in residential districts. In historic preservation districts, fence materials visible from public rights-of-way must be compatible with the architectural character of the district and may require Historic Preservation Board approval. Due to the HVHZ designation covering all of Miami-Dade County, fence construction must meet enhanced wind resistance standards, and materials must be rated for the local wind speed requirements.
Non-compliant fence materials trigger Code Compliance citations and required replacement or modification. Unmaintained fence coverings are subject to property maintenance enforcement. Contact Code Compliance at (305) 604-2489.
