Doral, FL Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Section 74-221 permits ordinary wire fences in every zoning district except where another part of the fence article prohibits them, but treats barbed wire as a specialized, narrowly allowed material. Barbed wire is only permitted in the city's business and industrial districts, and only as a topping: it must be installed on an angled extension of no more than 16 inches above the top of a wall or fence that is already at least six feet tall. That topping cannot carry more than three strands of barbed wire, and it cannot extend out over a public right-of-way or over property under different ownership.

Read together with the neighboring Section 74-215, which restricts chain link fences in residential zoning districts to locations behind the front building line, except in general use districts and around HOA- or condo-maintained residential communities, the code draws a clear line: standard wire and chain link are the default residential fencing material, while barbed wire is treated as a commercial and industrial security measure that residential and most other properties cannot use at all. A low-voltage electric fence is regulated separately, and more heavily, under Section 74-270, which requires a special exception, a surrounding non-electric perimeter fence, and warning signage, and is limited to Industrial Commercial, Industrial and Industrial Restrictive zoning.
