Oregon, OH Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

02(a) prohibits barbed wire, razor wire, concertina wire, embedded glass shards, ultra barrier, electrified fencing and other hazardous fencing in all zoning classifications. The only exception is the C-I, M-1 and M-2 Districts, and even there such fencing is allowed solely in side and rear yards, only when not within one hundred feet of a residential district, never in a front yard setback, and never along a street right-of-way. An electrified fence permitted under that exception must carry conspicuous warning signs reading "WARNING--ELECTRIC FENCE" at intervals no greater than forty feet.

Farm animal containment fencing in A-1 Agriculture Districts not used as a dwelling, and electronic underground pet containment fences citywide, are exempt from the prohibition entirely. Subsection (c), Materials, then governs which ordinary materials may be used where: walls and fences generally must use high-quality materials such as tinted or textured block, brick, stone, or ornamental metal that complement the surrounding development. Chain link is allowed in "R" Districts and A-1 Districts used as a dwelling, and also in C-I, M-1 and M-2 Districts. Vinyl fencing is limited to "R" Districts and A-1 Districts used as a dwelling.

Wood fencing is likewise allowed only in "R" Districts and A-1 Districts used as a dwelling, and is barred from Commercial "C" and the C-I, M-1, M-2 and Advanced Manufacturing Districts, except that wood may still be paired with metal frames for gates within required screening walls.
