Toledo allows wood, vinyl, chain link, wrought iron, and masonry fences in residential zones. Barbed wire and electrified fencing are banned in residential districts. Historic districts restrict materials to wood, wrought iron, and historically appropriate styles.
Residential fencing in Toledo may be constructed of wood, vinyl or PVC, chain link, aluminum, wrought iron, and masonry such as brick or stone. Chain link with vinyl coating is the most common in working-class West Toledo and East Toledo neighborhoods. Historic districts including Old West End, Vistula, Westmoreland, and parts of the Warehouse District require materials appropriate to the district character, typically wood pickets, wrought iron, or stone and brick piers. Vinyl and chain link are generally not approved in historic front yards. Barbed wire, razor wire, and electrified fencing are prohibited in residential zones but permitted in industrial zones with appropriate height and setback, typically at least six feet above ground with concertina above standard fence height. The finished side of a fence (smooth rails facing out) must face the neighboring property or right of way in most residential contexts. Salt-treated lumber remains popular given Ohio winters, and chain link posts should be set below the frost line of about 36 inches.
Prohibited materials in residential zones: $100 to $500 citation plus abatement order. Historic district material violations: additional HDC review and potential full removal order.
