Sanford, FL Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Under the fence and wall standards, every fence must use materials appropriate to its purpose and location, and every wall must carry a decorative finish such as masonry, brick, stucco or paint. Corrugated or sheet metal fencing and walls are flatly prohibited and unlawful, as are electrified fences or any other potentially injurious, hazardous or noxious material or construction technique. Barbed wire or similar attachments are permitted only when mounted atop a chain-link fence that is at least 6 feet high, oriented toward the interior of the property, and necessary to keep people out of a hazardous location or to protect stored materials or equipment from vandalism or theft, and only where the property is not located within or adjacent to land zoned residential or for park use.

Wire or chain-link fencing generally must be built with a vinyl coating and cannot have exposed points, wires or prongs along its top edge. Wire or chain-link fencing is also barred on the front building line of a property, with the Administrative Official able to grant a special development order allowing it in agricultural districts or to temporarily secure an unsafe structure.
