Full Breakdown
Zoning Code § VII-1101(a)(3) bars razor wire, barbed wire, and coiled barbed wire on any fence citywide. Subsection (b)(3) carves out an exception: in the G, IGD, IHD, CI, I, and ILW industrial districts, barbed or razor wire may top a fence above six feet, extending no more than 38 inches beyond the ten-foot height limit. In the DTN downtown district, § VII-1101(b)(4) requires first-layer fences to be wrought iron, aluminum, or painted/stained wood or simulated wood pickets, spaced at least one and three-quarters inches apart with pickets no wider than four inches; other layers allow coated chain link, masonry finished on both sides, or the same wood/metal options up to six and one-half feet.
Violations & Fines
Installing prohibited barbed or razor wire outside the exempted industrial zones, or non-conforming picket spacing or material in the DTN layer, is a zoning violation subject to code enforcement action and required removal or replacement.
