Sarasota, FL Parking Rules: Loading Zones (2026)

Sarasota City Code Sec. 33-51 authorizes the city engineer to "determine the location of passenger and freight curb loading zones" and to post signs stating the hours each zone applies. Two companion sections spell out how long a vehicle may actually stay. Sec. 33-113 limits a passenger curb loading zone to "the expeditious loading or unloading of passengers" and caps the stop at five minutes during posted hours; any other purpose, including a quick errand, is a restricted-zone violation even if the space is otherwise empty.

Sec. 33-114 governs freight curb loading zones: a vehicle may stop there only for "the expeditious unloading and delivery or pickup and loading of materials," for no more than thirty minutes, though a passenger vehicle may still stop briefly to load or unload passengers if doing so doesn't block a freight vehicle waiting to use the zone. The city engineer also has separate authority under Sec. 33-50 to permit backloading of merchandise at an angle to the curb, subject to whatever conditions that individual permit imposes.

Outside the hours a loading zone's sign states it is in effect, the space reverts to whatever general parking rule applies to that stretch of curb. Enforcement follows the standard Chapter 33 process: an officer affixes a citation to the vehicle (Sec. 33-80), the registered owner has 14 days to pay or file an appeal with the parking unit before losing the right to contest (Sec. 33-166(b)), and the fine schedule in Sec. 33-167 sets $35 for parking in a restricted area, the category that covers a loading-zone overstay or misuse.

Unpaid fines add $15 delinquency fees every 30 days up to $45, and three or more citations to the same vehicle within 60 days add a $35 habitual-offender fee for each citation past the third.
