Southaven, MS Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Sec. 13-10(h)(a) controls fence materials in front of the building line in every residential district in the City of Southaven, including residential uses in PUDs and office districts. No fence can be erected between the front of a building and the street other than a decorative fence such as a picket fence, wrought iron fence or split rail fence, and that fence must be set back at least ten (10) feet from the right-of-way. The code states outright that wire fences such as chain link are prohibited in the front yard. Fences erected by the local, state or federal government are not prohibited in any of these areas.

On a residential corner lot with two (2) front yards, the yard designated for the entrance stays under those decorative fence rules, per Sec. 13-10(h)(b). Walls, hedges and similar structures follow the same guidelines as fences under 13-10(h)(c).

Sec. 13-10(h)(f) adds a citywide material ban: barbed wire fencing is prohibited except in agricultural zoned properties. That makes the agricultural (A) district the only place in the City of Southaven where barbed wire is allowed under this section. Sec. 13-10(h) itself prints no rule on electric fencing, so this page states none.

Commercial and industrial districts, including PBP, use a review process under 13-10(h)(d). New fences and fence materials in existing developments are subject to administrative review by the office of planning and development, and in new developments they are subject to design review committee review and approval. Sec. 13-10(e)(3) requires garbage facilities, loading docks and utility service areas to be screened from public and private rights-of-way with an opaque masonry or wood fence of similar material to match the building.
