Walnut Creek allows standard fence materials including wood, vinyl, masonry, stucco, wrought iron, and chain link with few restrictions, but certain materials such as barbed wire and electrified fencing are prohibited in residential zones, and front-yard designs are subject to aesthetic review.
Walnut Creek does not impose heavy material restrictions on residential fencing. Wood (cedar, redwood, pressure-treated pine), vinyl/PVC, composite, masonry (block, brick, stone), stucco-over-frame, wrought iron, tubular steel, and chain link are all commonly permitted. Chain link is allowed in most residential zones but is often discouraged or restricted in front-yard setbacks due to aesthetic concerns and may require a slatted, woven, or landscaped screen treatment in visible locations. Barbed wire, razor wire, and electrified fencing are prohibited in all residential zones and restricted to specific industrial and agricultural contexts with setbacks from public rights-of-way (see barbed-wire subcategory). Hillside and view-sensitive design review areas β including parts of Northgate, Rudgear, and upper Saranap β may require wood or wrought iron and discourage tall solid walls. Fence staining and paint colors are generally the owner's choice in standard residential zones. Shared boundary fences must meet California Civil Code 841 (Good Neighbor Fence Act) cost-sharing rules regardless of material. Any fence doubling as a pool barrier must also meet pool-barrier standards (see pool-fences subcategory).
