Wylie, TX Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Wylie Code of Ordinances § 22-233 prohibits any fence built so it may continuously conduct electrical current in a zoning district where farm animals are not allowed, meaning a live-current perimeter fence is off-limits in ordinary residential neighborhoods. The same section carves out a narrow exception for single-strand wire that runs through an approved low-voltage regulator, but that wire can only sit along the interior baseline of a fence that is already permitted, and no separate permit is required for that low-voltage strand. Section 22-243 bans barbed wire outright citywide, with the sole exception being barbed wire mounted on fence arms located in industrial zoning districts.

That barbed-wire exception has to be read together with § 22-242, which limits fence arms themselves to industrial districts and forbids them in residential zones or any district other than industrial, so a homeowner cannot install arm-mounted barbed wire even in a district that otherwise allows farm animals. Every fence, regardless of material, still needs a building-official permit under § 22-232 and a compliant plot plan, and § 22-234 requires the material and design to also satisfy the zoning ordinance for the district. An inspection under § 22-244 follows completion, and the building official issues a card of acceptance or rejects the fence if it uses a prohibited material.
