Wylie, TX Fence Regulations: Fence Permit Requirements (2026)

Sec. 22-232 of the Fences article makes it unlawful to install a fence, or to make any alterations, additions or changes to one, without first getting a permit from the building official. The only permit-free work allowed is minor repair: a property owner may replace up to one pole, or 16 linear inches of pickets or rails, within any given 30-day period. The permit fee is set by the fee schedule in Appendix A to the Code of Ordinances and must be paid before the permit is issued, and the building official can require a plot plan showing lot size, existing improvements and the fence's proposed location before approving the application.

The building official may also refuse a permit to anyone previously convicted of violating the fences article. Once installed, a permitted fence must be inspected on completion, with the building official issuing a card of acceptance or rejecting the fence under Sec. 22-244, and Sec. 22-245 requires every fence built under this article to stay in compliance at all times going forward. Substantive limits enforced alongside the permit include an eight-foot height cap on rear and side yard fences in residential districts, a four-foot cap on front yard fences unless the lot exceeds one-half acre, and a citywide ban on barbed wire outside industrial-district fence arms. Appeals from the building official's interpretation of the fences article go to the Construction Code Board under Sec. 22-246.
