Compton is largely an urban, developed city not in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. Standard vegetation maintenance applies under property maintenance codes. CA PRC 4291 defensible space requirements (100 ft clearance) apply only in designated fire hazard areas.
Under the California Fire Code adopted by Compton and the LA County Fire Code (Title 32, Sections 325 and 327), properties must maintain defensible space. The standard clearance zone is 100 feet from structures and 10 feet along roads. In Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones (VHFHSZ), enhanced clearance up to 200 feet may be required. Grass must be cut to 3 inches or less. Trees should be limbed up from the ground to one-third of their height. Dead, dry, or neglected landscaping that could transmit fire must be removed. The LA County Fire Department conducts annual D-Space inspections. Property owners who fail to comply receive notices and have 30 days to abate. Santa Clarita Valley areas adjacent to Compton's fire districts follow similar LA County Fire requirements.
Non-compliance: fines up to $1,400, and LA County may hire outside parties to clear vegetation at the property owner's expense. Costs become a lien on the property.
