Grand Prairie limits grass, weeds, and vegetation on private property to a maximum height of 10 inches under Chapter 29, Article V of the Code of Ordinances. Overgrown vegetation is declared a nuisance and health hazard, abatable by the City after notice, with abatement costs assessed as a lien on the property.
Grand Prairie regulates overgrown vegetation under Chapter 29 (Code Compliance), Article V (General Nuisances) of the City Code, applying authority granted to Texas home-rule cities by Tex. Health and Safety Code Chapter 342 (Local Regulation of Sanitation). Grass, weeds, shrubs, and uncultivated vegetation on developed lots may not exceed 10 inches in height. The property owner and the tenant in possession share responsibility for maintenance, including parkways and alleys abutting the lot. Brush placed at curbside for collection must be cut into pieces no longer than six feet, stacked no more than three feet high, with a maximum of one cubic yard per scheduled pickup. When a violation is observed, Code Compliance issues a notice of violation giving the owner an opportunity to abate; if uncorrected, the City may enter the property, mow or remove the vegetation, and bill the owner. Unpaid abatement charges become a lien on the property as authorized by H&S Code 342.007. Texas does not designate Grand Prairie as a state-mapped wildfire hazard zone, so brush-clearance distances from structures are not separately required by city code; defensible-space practices remain advisory under Texas A&M Forest Service guidance. For lots adjacent to Joe Pool Lake or other open-space areas, residents should still maintain firebreaks consistent with Tarrant or Dallas County burn-ban orders.
First violations typically receive a written notice with a compliance deadline (commonly 7-10 days). Continued non-compliance can result in city abatement, billed costs, and a Class C municipal court citation up to $500 per day under Chapter 29. Unpaid charges become a recordable lien on the property.
