Idaho Falls has no dedicated wildland defensible-space clearance ordinance. Weed/brush clearing by burning requires a Fire Code Operational Permit and is illegal during burn bans. Under Idaho Code 39-2609, fireworks may not be used in any severe-fire-threat vegetation area, and Bonneville County issues seasonal burn bans to limit wildfire risk.
Idaho Falls sits on the relatively flat Snake River Plain, and the City does not publish a formal vegetation-management / defensible-space clearance ordinance comparable to wildland-urban-interface cities in higher-fire-risk states. Brush, weed and irrigation-ditch clearing by burning is treated as 'irrigation/weed control' fire by the Idaho Falls Fire Department and is only permissible with a Fire Code Operational Permit from Fire Prevention, where other means are impractical and the fire poses little to no nuisance. Statewide fire law addresses dry-vegetation risk indirectly: Idaho Code 39-2609(4) makes it unlawful to use fireworks in any area that constitutes a severe fire threat based on the vegetative conditions during the current fire season, as determined by the county commission or authority having jurisdiction, when notice is given. During hot, dry summers the Bonneville County Commissioners issue county-wide burn bans (for example, effective July 25 through September 30, 2025) that ban all outdoor burning, fireworks and exploding targets to reduce wildfire risk and protect lives and property; campfires in approved pits at improved campgrounds or picnic areas are excepted. Property owners should keep dry grass and weeds cleared and avoid parking vehicles on dry grass as the county recommends.
Burning to clear brush/weeds without a permit, or any burning during a county burn ban, is illegal; Idaho Falls Fire officials can order any hazardous open burning extinguished and cite under City Code 7-10-3(L). Fireworks used in a designated severe-fire-threat area are an infraction with a $100 fine (Idaho Code 39-2609). Confirm current restrictions with Idaho Falls Fire Prevention (208) 612-8497 or the Bonneville County Commissioners before clearing by fire.
