Requirements: (1) the fire's total fuel area must not exceed 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height, and it may be used only for pleasure, religious, ceremonial, cooking, warmth or similar purposes; (2) recreational fires must not be conducted within 25 feet of a structure or combustible material, and conditions that could let the fire spread within 25 feet must be eliminated before ignition; recreational fires in approved portable outdoor fireplaces must not be within 15 feet of a structure or combustible material; (3) the fire must be constantly attended until extinguished, with at least one portable fire extinguisher rated a minimum 4-A (or other extinguishing method) available for immediate use. A fire larger than 3 ft x 2 ft is classified as a 'bonfire' and requires a Fire Code Operational Permit from Idaho Falls Fire Prevention. Recreational fires may be extinguished at a fire official's discretion if they produce a significant smoke hazard.
Idaho Falls Fire Department officials are authorized to order any individual to extinguish open burning that creates or adds to a hazardous or objectionable situation; a recreational fire producing a significant smoke hazard from wet or unclean wood may be extinguished at the responding official's discretion.
