Idaho Falls City Code limits how long a motorhome or trailer may be parked on a public street or alley for loading and unloading, and bars parking heavy vehicles in residential zones. Recreational equipment cannot be stored long-term on the street, and zoning rules prohibit storing obsolete vehicles in residential yards.
On public streets and alleys, Idaho Falls City Code Sec. 9-4-5 makes it unlawful for a motorhome or trailer to be parked or stored for purposes of loading and unloading in excess of two (2) periods of twenty-four (24) hours within any 7-day time period. The code defines 'motorhome' and 'trailer' by reference to Idaho Code 49-114(12) and 49-121(6), and treats a vehicle as parked 'in the same location' even if it is moved within three hundred feet (300') in any direction. Separately, Sec. 9-4-3 makes it an infraction to park any motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight greater than 10,000 pounds in any residentially-zoned district unless necessary to load or unload expeditiously. Vehicles, motorhomes, or trailers unlawfully parked may be removed and impounded under the chapter. For storage on private property, the City's Title 11 zoning ordinance provides that no yard or open space in any Residential Zone may be used for the storage of junk, debris, or obsolete vehicles, and no storage is allowed within the front building setback line along a street. Code Enforcement notes that legally parked RVs are not a violation, but a recreational vehicle cannot be occupied as a dwelling in a residential zone (Zoning Ordinance Sec. 4-15).
Leaving a motorhome or trailer on a street or alley beyond two 24-hour periods in any 7-day window, parking a vehicle over 10,000 pounds GVW in a residential zone, or storing obsolete vehicles or junk in a residential yard can result in an infraction, a code enforcement notice, and possible impound or towing at the owner's expense.
