Fire pit rules in Sedona, AZ β also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances β cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
Yavapai County Outdoor Fire Ordinance 2025-2 governs fire pits in unincorporated areas. Open wood fires are restricted when Stage 1 or Stage 2 fire bans are active. Propane and gas fire pits with on/off switches are generally allowed even during Stage 1 in developed sites.
Ordinance 2025-2 replaced Ordinance 2020-2 and is the controlling document for open fires in unincorporated Yavapai County. During unrestricted periods, recreational fire pits are allowed when attended, kept under 3 feet diameter, located at least 25 feet from structures, and supervised by an adult with water on hand. When Stage 1 restrictions are declared, wood and charcoal fires are prohibited outside Developed Sites (homes, established campgrounds). Gas and propane appliances with shut-off valves remain exempt because the flame can be extinguished instantly. Stage 2 bans all fires regardless of fuel. The county is divided into five Fire Ban Zones, each declared separately based on local conditions.
Class 1 misdemeanor under ARS Title 13; cost recovery for emergency response under ARS Β§13-1709 if a wildfire results. Fines up to $2,500 plus restitution.
