Anchorage bans sale, possession, and discharge of consumer fireworks under AMC 10.35. Only licensed public displays permitted. Fines start at 300 dollars and fireworks are confiscated.
Anchorage Municipal Code Title 10 Chapter 35 prohibits consumer fireworks throughout the unified municipality. This includes firecrackers, bottle rockets, Roman candles, aerial repeaters, and mortars. While Alaska state law (AS 18.72) permits fireworks sales in unorganized areas, Anchorage exercised its home-rule authority to ban them citywide due to the extreme wildfire risk in the surrounding boreal forest and WUI neighborhoods like Hillside and Eagle River. Only state-licensed pyrotechnic operators conducting public displays with an Anchorage Fire Department permit may discharge fireworks. Residents traveling to Houston AK or Mat-Su Borough to buy fireworks still cannot bring them back into Anchorage β possession alone is a violation. AFD and APD run enforcement sweeps around July 4th and New Year's Eve.
Civil fine of 300 dollars per incident plus confiscation. Fires caused by illegal fireworks may result in criminal charges and full suppression-cost recovery.
