Only sparklers, party poppers, and novelty items are permitted for consumer use. Professional fireworks displays require permits from the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Cook County Chapter 58 (Offenses and Miscellaneous Provisions) reinforces state prohibitions. The Cook County Sheriff's Office enforces fireworks laws in unincorporated areas. Possession of illegal fireworks is a Class A misdemeanor with fines up to $2,500 and up to one year in jail.
