Illinois law prohibits the sale, possession, and use of consumer fireworks by the general public, and Schaumburg enforces this prohibition strictly. Only sparklers and certain novelty items (snakes, snaps, glow worms) are legal. The Village hosts a professional fireworks display annually.
Under the Illinois Pyrotechnics Use Act (425 ILCS 35) and Schaumburg Village Code, consumer fireworks including firecrackers, Roman candles, bottle rockets, mortars, and aerial fireworks are illegal to possess, sell, or discharge. Only novelty items and sparklers that comply with state definitions are permitted. Schaumburg Police actively enforce fireworks prohibitions, particularly around the Fourth of July and New Year's Eve. The Village typically hosts its own professional fireworks display at the annual Septemberfest celebration. Residents can report illegal fireworks to Schaumburg PD at (847) 882-3586.
Possession or use of illegal fireworks is a Class A misdemeanor under Illinois law, punishable by up to 364 days in jail and fines up to $2,500. The Village may also impose local fines of $75 to $750 through administrative adjudication.
