Cornelius follows NC state law strictly limiting consumer fireworks. Only ground-based sparkling devices such as sparklers, fountains, and snakes are permitted. All aerial fireworks, firecrackers, Roman candles, and rockets are illegal statewide.
Per N.C.G.S. 14-410 and 14-413, North Carolina is among the strictest states for fireworks. Cornelius Police enforce the state prohibition within town limits. Sparklers, fountains, smoke devices, and other non-aerial, non-explosive novelties are legal. Aerial fireworks, firecrackers, and any device that rises into the air or explodes are classified as a Class 2 misdemeanor. The Town does not issue permits to residents; only licensed pyrotechnicians may conduct permitted public displays.
Possession or use of illegal fireworks is a Class 2 misdemeanor punishable by up to 60 days in jail and fines up to 1,000 dollars. Cornelius Police step up enforcement around July 4th and New Year's Eve.
