Selma permits only state-classified Safe and Sane fireworks during the Fourth of July season. Dangerous fireworks (those that explode or launch into the air) are banned year-round under Section 7-3-11. Ordinance 2021-3 established administrative fines of $1,000 for a first offense, $1,500 second, and $2,000 third.
Selma Municipal Code Title VII, Chapter 3 (Fireworks) governs the sale, possession, and use of fireworks within city limits. Section 7-3-11 bans the possession, use, storage, sale, display, giving, delivery, and transporting of 25 pounds or less of dangerous fireworks in all zones. Dangerous fireworks are defined as those that explode or are launched into the air, including modified versions of approved types. Only Safe and Sane fireworks as defined by California Health and Safety Code Section 12500 et seq. are permitted. State law allows the sale of Safe and Sane fireworks from noon on June 28 through noon on July 6 each year. The city maintains an aggressive enforcement campaign against illegal fireworks, codified in Ordinance 2021-3, with administrative fines issued to property owners who permit illegal firework use on their premises: $1,000 first offense, $1,500 second offense, $2,000 third offense. Fines may be delivered in person or by mail. Residents should report illegal fireworks to the Selma Police Department non-emergency line at (559) 896-2525, not 911.
Dangerous fireworks possession/use: SMC 7-3-11 violation plus administrative fine. First offense $1,000, second $1,500, third $2,000 (Ord. 2021-3). Property owner fined even if tenant or guest is responsible.
