Mosinee, WI Fire Regulations: Outdoor Burning (2026)

Sec. 34-7(a) prohibits building any outdoor fire within the corporate limits of the City of Mosinee except as the exceptions listed in subsection (b) allow, making an outright ban the default rule rather than the exception. Subsection (b)(4) is the only exception written for ordinary yard-debris burning: controlled burning of dry leaves and other nonoffensive, dry yard debris is allowed only during two windows each year, April 1 through May 31 and October 1 through November 30, and only if the fire is monitored by a responsible person until it extinguishes itself completely, kept off the public street pavement or gutter, located at least 50 feet from any neighboring residence, not lit on days when wind or atmospheric conditions would endanger public health or safety, and never used to covertly burn offensive substances or materials.

Subsection (c) layers a broader emergency power on top of that seasonal window: the fire chief can prohibit any or all bonfires and outdoor rubbish fires citywide whenever atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make them hazardous, which suspends even the seasonal leaf-burning exception. Subsection (d) separately bars burning on any street, curb, gutter, or sidewalk at any time. Because Chapter 34 has no penalty clause of its own for open burning, a violation of the general ban or the leaf-burning conditions is punished under the city's general penalty in Sec. 1-13.
