Rothschild, WI Fire Regulations: Outdoor Burning (2026)

Section 306-45 sets the baseline: outdoor burning in the Village is allowed by permit only, for unique reasons and when the article's conditions are met. Section 306-46 requires the permit to come from the fire District before anyone kindles or maintains an open fire, and lets the District attach conditions on burning hours, days, material, pile size, clearance from flammables, supervision and ash disposal. Recreational fires, outdoor cooking in a purpose-built device, and District training burns are exempted from the permit itself under § 306-47, but every other open fire needs one.

Once a permit issues, § 306-48 sets hard limits: the burn pile cannot exceed four feet in any horizontal direction or three feet vertically, must sit at least 50 feet from any structure, wood pile, wooden fence, trees or bushes (or 20 feet if contained in an approved incinerator), must be attended by someone at least 18 years old with fire-extinguishing equipment on hand, and can only run from 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Section 306-49 adds a hard weather cutoff on top of the permit conditions, prohibiting all outdoor burning, including recreational fires, whenever wind velocity exceeds nine miles per hour or circumstances make the fire potentially hazardous.
