Propane (LP-gas) storage in Alhambra is regulated by the 2022 California Fire Code, adopted as Chapter 19.02 of the Alhambra Municipal Code and enforced by the Alhambra Fire Department. Small barbecue and patio-heater cylinders are allowed for home use, but larger aggregate quantities and any commercial LP-gas storage trigger permit and clearance requirements under California Fire Code Chapter 61.
Alhambra adopted the 2022 California Fire Code as Chapter 19.02 of its Municipal Code, so liquefied-petroleum-gas (LP-gas / propane) storage is governed by California Fire Code Chapter 61. For ordinary households, small portable cylinders used with gas barbecues, patio heaters and similar appliances are permitted; the Fire Code generally treats residential possession of small cylinders as routine and does not require a permit for typical backyard quantities. As aggregate storage grows, however, the Fire Code requires an operational permit (commonly triggered around an aggregate of 500 gallons or more of LP-gas, and for many smaller commercial installations), along with rules on container location, separation distances from buildings and property lines, protection from vehicle impact, and prohibitions on storing cylinders in basements or below-grade areas. Best practice that the Fire Department reinforces from the Fire Code and LP-gas standards: store and use propane cylinders outdoors in a secure, upright position, never inside a home, garage or shed; keep spare cylinders away from heat sources and the grill itself; and never use a damaged cylinder or one that has been in a fire. Cylinders must be filled only by licensed dealers and must bear a current requalification date. Multifamily and commercial sites that store propane are inspected by the Alhambra Fire Department's Community Risk Reduction Division, which can require permits and corrective action.
Storing LP-gas without a required Fire Code operational permit, exceeding allowed quantities, or storing cylinders indoors or below grade violates the adopted California Fire Code (Municipal Code Chapter 19.02) and can be cited by the Alhambra Fire Department, with orders to correct or remove the hazard. Filling or using outdated or damaged cylinders also violates LP-gas safety standards. Penalties follow the city's general Fire Code enforcement and abatement process.
