Bayonne, NJ Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Bayonne City Code § 19-6 bans bulk storage and use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) everywhere within City limits, with a single carve-out: amounts not exceeding 2,000 gallons water capacity may be stored and used only in the zoning districts where bulk storage of flammable and combustible liquids is specifically permitted under Chapter 35, Zoning Regulations. Section 19-9.h layers on an amendment to Uniform Fire Code Chapter 36, F-3603.2, flatly prohibiting any LPG or LNG terminal, plant, refinery, tank farm, or gas utility plant, and any installation whose aggregate containers exceed 2,000 gallons water capacity, anywhere in the City.

Below that bulk threshold, § 19-11.a.1(d) requires a Type I Permit, issued by the code enforcement unit within the Bayonne Fire Prevention Bureau, for any LPG or LNG installation using storage containers of more than 10 gallons but not more than 1,000 gallons individual water capacity; the Type I Permit fee is $50 under § 19-12.b. The Uniform Fire Code is locally enforced by the Bayonne Bureau of Fire Prevention within the Bayonne Fire Department under § 19-2, which conducts the periodic inspections these permits require.

A property owner may seek relief from these limits only through the variance procedure in § 19-10, filed with the Fire Official under N.J.A.C. 5:70-2.14.
