Hesperia, CA Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Hesperia adopts the California Fire Code (Title 24, Part 9) by reference; CFC Chapter 61 incorporates NFPA 58 (Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code). Key residential standards: portable DOT cylinders ≤2.5 lb may be stored inside; cylinders >2.5 lb must be stored outdoors in ventilated locations. Stationary ASME tanks up to 125 gal water capacity require 5 ft of clearance from any building opening, property line, and source of ignition (NFPA 58 §6.4.1). Tanks 125–500 gal require 10 ft, 500–2,000 gal require 25 ft, and larger commercial installations require greater separation. All tanks must be protected from vehicle impact (bollards required where exposed). Filling/exchange operations require an operator with a California State Fire Marshal LPG license. In Hesperia's VHFHSZ areas (post July 22, 2025), additional defensible-space clearance applies around tanks under PRC §4291 — vegetation must be kept clear 10 ft around any LPG container. Permits for new installations over 125 gal and any commercial dispensing must be obtained from San Bernardino County Fire Office of the Fire Marshal.
