Hutto, TX Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Hutto Code of Ordinances § 10.05.001 adopts, as part of the city's own LP-gas article, "the most current state railroad commission safety rules for liquefied petroleum gas," the applicable provisions of the International Fuel Gas Code, and National Fire Protection Association regulations. Section 10.05.005 then requires that "the use, handling, transportation, and storage of any form of manufactured or liquefied petroleum gases and the installation of liquefied petroleum gas equipment" within city limits comply with those same three incorporated standards. Section 10.05.004 permits LP gas as a fuel source for residential, commercial, and domestic buildings so long as the installation does not violate the article or applicable state Railroad Commission rules, and separately allows LP gas as a motor-vehicle fuel only where the vehicle is licensed under the Railroad Commission's safety rules at 16 Texas Administrative Code, part 1, chapter 9.

Section 10.05.002 puts the chief building official in charge of confirming compliance, and any requirement not specifically covered by the article is referred to the city council for a decision. Because the local code has no separate numeric tank-size cap of its own, the binding storage limits, setbacks, and container standards for residential propane come from the incorporated Railroad Commission rules and NFPA codes rather than a number printed directly in Hutto's ordinance text.
