Islip, NY Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Chapter 19, Article XVII of the Code of the Town of Islip governs liquefied petroleum gas use townwide, including the hamlets of Bay Shore, Central Islip, Sayville and the rest of unincorporated Islip (the incorporated villages of Brightwaters, Islandia, Ocean Beach and Saltaire have their own codes). Under § 19-103E(3), "Storage of containers must be outside the building, at least 25 feet from any building. " Small quantities are treated differently: § 19-103F allows DOT cylinders of up to 2 1/2 pounds' water capacity, holding no more than 200 pounds of LP-gas total, to be stored or displayed inside a building open to the public, and § 19-103E(1) otherwise bars any container from being kept inside, on the roof or on a balcony of an occupied building.

Anyone operating a fixed installation, resale point or vessel-to-vessel transfer location must first obtain a permit from the Chief Fire Marshal under § 19-105A, and § 19-101A(2) requires written permission before installing any tank or container over 100 gallons' water capacity, with plans filed in duplicate showing container locations, capacities and property lines. Permits run one year under § 19-105E and must be posted or made available on-site under § 19-105D. All equipment must conform to the Chief Fire Marshal's rules and the Fire Code of New York State under § 19-102A.
