All Islip dwellings require working smoke alarms on every story and outside each sleeping area per 19 NYCRR 1225 (FCNYS 915). Homes built or sold after April 2019 must use 10-year sealed-battery or hardwired alarms under NY Executive Law 378.
New York State adopted the 10-year sealed-battery requirement statewide effective April 1, 2019. Replaceable 9-volt alarms may no longer be sold. Carbon monoxide alarms are also required within 15 ft of sleeping areas under Amandas Law. The Islip Fire Marshal inspects alarms during rental permit renewals and certificate of occupancy inspections. Landlords must install and test alarms; tenants must maintain them once occupied.
Missing or disabled alarms: $250 per device plus C of O hold. Rental permit non-renewal. Criminal liability if fatality results.
