Utah Code 53-7-301 et seq. and Utah Administrative Rule R710-6 give the State Fire Marshal exclusive authority over liquefied petroleum gas, adopting NFPA 58 statewide for tank installation, storage, certification, and operator licensing.
Under Utah Code Title 53, Chapter 7, Part 3 (Liquefied Petroleum Gas Act), the State Fire Marshal regulates LPG storage, transport, and dispensing. Administrative Rule R710-6 adopts NFPA 58 (Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code) and NFPA 54 (National Fuel Gas Code) as the statewide minimum. Plans must be submitted and a permit secured before installing any underground or aboveground LPG tank exceeding 125 gallons, except 500-gallon-or-smaller tanks at one- and two-family dwellings. Companies handling LPG must hold a state license, and operators must pass examinations administered by the Utah LPG Board. Local enforcement may not adopt less stringent standards.
Operating without an LPG license or installing without permits is a class B misdemeanor under 53-7-314, with civil penalties up to $1,000 per violation.
