Waterloo, IA Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Waterloo's mobile home park chapter sets its fire-prevention and gas rules inside the design-standards section, § 9-10-9, rather than in a standalone residential propane ordinance; the city's code does not separately address LP-gas storage for a single-family home outside a licensed park. Subsection H, Fire Prevention; Natural And Liquefied Petroleum Gas, requires a standard fire hydrant within three hundred feet of every mobile home in the park, so no space sits far from a water source if a gas-fed fire breaks out. It then allows natural and liquefied petroleum products at individual mobile home spaces on one condition: the installation has to comply with the city's gas piping code, which is enforced separately from this park-specific chapter.

The subsection closes with a blanket fire-safety rule that isn't limited to gas appliances at all: no open fires are permitted anywhere they could endanger life or property, and no fire, gas-fed or otherwise, may ever be left unattended. Because chapter 10 doesn't carry its own dedicated violation-and-penalty section, an infraction of § 9-10-9.H falls back on Waterloo's general penalty rule in § 1-3-1, which makes any act the code declares unlawful, when no other penalty is specified, punishable by a fine up to the maximum for a simple misdemeanor under Iowa Code § 903.1(1)(a).

The chapter also ties compliance with § 9-10-9 to the park's operating license, since § 9-10-8 allows the city to revoke a mobile home park license for code violations.
