When a building permit is pulled for additions, alterations or repairs above the statutory cost threshold, owners must bring smoke and CO alarms up to current code. Landlords are responsible for installing and maintaining required alarms in rental units.
Missing or non-compliant smoke or carbon monoxide alarms are enforced under state law and the city's adopted building/fire codes; non-compliance can be cited during inspections, can block permit final approval, and exposes landlords to liability for failing to provide required alarms in rentals.
