Durham enforces NC Residential Code Section R314.3 requiring smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, and on every story including basements. Alarms must be hardwired with battery backup.
Durham adopts the North Carolina Residential Code smoke alarm requirements under Section R314.3. Smoke alarms must be installed inside each sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of bedrooms, and on each additional story of the dwelling including basements and habitable attics but not crawl spaces. Alarms must be listed per UL 268 and receive primary power from building wiring served by a commercial source with battery backup when primary power is interrupted. Smoke alarms must be installed at least 3 feet horizontally from the door or opening of a bathroom containing a bathtub or shower unless placement would prevent meeting the code requirement. Combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are permitted in lieu of standalone smoke alarms. Durham Building Inspections enforces these standards during new construction and renovation permits.
