Durham sits in the Piedmont region with generally low wildfire risk. North Carolina leads the nation in wildland-urban interface acreage, but Durham is largely urbanized with no locally designated wildfire overlay zones.
Durham is located in the North Carolina Piedmont and is primarily an urban and suburban environment with low wildfire risk compared to the mountains and coastal plains. North Carolina has more wildland-urban interface (WUI) acreage than any other state, with over 13.4 million WUI acres statewide and 2.2 million homes in the WUI. However, Durham County does not have locally designated wildfire overlay zones or mandatory defensible-space ordinances. The NC Forest Service works with local fire departments to develop Community Wildfire Protection Plans for at-risk areas. Durham County Emergency Management monitors wildfire smoke health advisories, as fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from distant wildfires can affect the Research Triangle area. The NC Forest Service conducts controlled burns and fuel-reduction treatments in communities identified in these plans. Contact Durham County Emergency Management or the NC Forest Service for current risk assessments.
