Haverhill, MA Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

The City of Haverhill Fire Department, under Article II of Chapter 128, Charges and Fees, Miscellaneous, adopted September 16, 2003 by Doc. 141, sets its own fee schedule for the smoke detector inspections required before certificates of compliance are issued. Section 128-7 ties the inspection to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 148, Fire Prevention, Section 10A, and charges $50 for a single-family dwelling or single-dwelling unit, $100 for a two-family dwelling, $150 for any building or structure with six or fewer residential or commercial units, and $500 for any building or structure with more than six units.

A related carbon monoxide detector inspection fee of $25 per unit applies under Section 128-7.1, added by the same June 10, 2008 amendment, Doc. 73. If the Fire Department must return after a failed check, Section 128-8 sets reinspection fees at $15 for three units or fewer, $30 for four to six units, and $50 for seven or more units. These fees fund the Fire Department's inspection program and are typically paid by the property owner at the sale or transfer of a residential property, or when a new dwelling unit is created, since state law conditions the transfer on a valid compliance certificate.
