NRS 477.930 and HMC Title 6 require smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level. New construction requires hardwired interconnected alarms. 10-year sealed batteries for replacements.
Nevada Revised Statutes 477.930 and the International Fire Code adopted through HMC Title 6 require working smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area (hallway), and on every level of a dwelling including basements. New construction and substantial remodels require hardwired 120V alarms with battery backup, interconnected so all alarms sound when one activates. Carbon monoxide alarms are required in dwellings with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages per NRS 477.935. Since 2020, Nevada requires replacement smoke alarms to have 10-year non-removable sealed lithium batteries (existing hardwired systems exempt). Alarms must be replaced every 10 years based on manufacturer date regardless of apparent function. Landlords must provide working alarms at the start of tenancy and test at each turnover. Tenants are responsible for battery replacement during tenancy unless alarm is hardwired. Henderson Fire offers free smoke alarms to income-qualified residents through the Sound the Alarm program with the American Red Cross.
Missing or disabled alarms: code enforcement citation and fines. Landlord failure to provide: tenant rescission rights and civil penalties under NRS Chapter 118A.
