Joliet enforces smoke and carbon monoxide detector requirements through the adopted International Fire Prevention Code and International Residential Code (Section 8-175 and Section 8-279). Rental properties must pass safety inspections including detector verification under the Rental Registration program.
Joliet has adopted the International Fire Prevention Code under Section 8-279 and the International Residential Code under Section 8-175, both of which require smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in residential dwellings. Illinois state law (430 ILCS 135, the Smoke Detector Act, and 430 ILCS 145, the Carbon Monoxide Alarm Detector Act) mandates smoke detectors on every level of a home and carbon monoxide detectors within 15 feet of sleeping areas in dwellings with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages. The Rental Registration Certificate program requires rental properties to pass fire safety inspections including verification of working smoke and CO detectors. The Fire Inspection Bureau under Section 8-22 conducts inspections.
Failure to maintain working detectors subject to fines up to $750. Rental certificates may be denied or revoked.
