Joliet, IL Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Sec. 19-139 lists twenty-four places drivers cannot park within Joliet, and the last of them targets front-yard and lawn parking specifically. Subsection (a)(24) makes it unlawful to park a vehicle in the front yard of a residential property unless it sits within a residential parking area, and it separately bars parking 'on grassy or open areas not designated for off-street parking or storage' under any circumstances, even on an unpaved or ungraveled patch that hasn't been set up for that purpose. The rule sits inside the broader 'Prohibited Parking Areas Enumerated' section that also bans parking on sidewalks, in intersections, within fifteen feet of fire hydrants and in marked fire lanes, so front-yard and grass parking is treated the same as those hazards rather than as a minor nuisance.

Joliet's Sec. 00 fine for 'Prohibited parking; parking in front yard or lawn of residence' under Sec. 00 general parking fine that applies to lesser offenses like meter violations. Anyone building or widening a driveway also has to stay inside the width and location limits of Sec. 26-57, which confines residential driveways to a side yard or the paved path to an attached garage, so converting an unpaved swath of front lawn into an ad hoc parking pad isn't a workaround even with a driveway permit.
