Code of Ordinances § 242-43B provides that "a minimum of one approved single-station or multiple-station smoke detector shall be installed in each sleeping area in Use Group R dwelling units and in the immediate area of the bedrooms," and further requires that "in all residential occupancies, smoke detectors shall be required on every story of the dwelling unit, including basements." The section carves out one exception for split-level construction: where there is no intervening door between adjacent levels, a detector on the upper level covers the adjacent lower level, provided the lower level sits less than one full story below, consistent with the Connecticut General Statutes.

This detector duty sits under § 242-43A's broader command that "all systems, devices and equipment to detect a fire, actuate an alarm, or suppress or control a fire... shall be properly maintained," which cross-references Chapter 103, Alarm Systems, for the town's separate false-alarm fee structure. Article VII's scope section, § 242-40, places responsibility for providing and maintaining these fire-safety facilities on the owner of the premises and bars anyone from occupying, or permitting occupancy of, a dwelling that fails to comply.
