Full Breakdown

Meridian amended IRC Section R314.2.2 so that most alterations, repairs, or additions to a dwelling require bringing smoke alarms up to current code, not just new construction. Only two narrow exceptions survive: exterior work like re-roofing, re-siding, window/door replacement, porches, decks, or electrical permits, and plumbing or mechanical system work. Any other remodel -- interior work, room additions, structural repairs -- must add or upgrade smoke alarms per Meridian City Code Section 10-1-3(T). The Building Official's office reviews compliance during the permit process administered under Title 10 of the Meridian City Code.

Violations & Fines

Working without triggering the required smoke alarm retrofit is a building code violation caught at permit inspection; the Building Official can red-tag work and withhold final approval until alarms are installed and interconnected per code.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does replacing my roof require adding smoke alarms in Meridian?
No. Meridian's code exempts exterior work -- re-roofing, re-siding, window or door replacement, porches, decks, and electrical permits -- from the smoke alarm retrofit trigger under Section 10-1-3(T).
What remodels in Meridian require new smoke alarms?
Interior remodels, room additions, and structural repairs trigger the requirement -- Meridian's code only exempts exterior-surface work and plumbing or mechanical system work from upgrading smoke alarms to current standards.
