Outdoor burning rules in Meridian, ID — also called the burn ban, open burning, or fire restriction ordinance — set when you can burn yard waste, debris, or run a recreational fire.
Meridian generally prohibits open burning. Residential outdoor burning, burn barrels, and agricultural burning in small subdivisions are banned under City Code Title 5, Chapter 2, and the adopted Fire Code. Cooking fires and recreational fires are allowed without a burn permit. Permitted open burns may run only 8:00 AM to sunset. Violations are misdemeanors.
The City of Meridian heavily restricts open burning. Under Meridian City Code Title 5, Chapter 2 (the Open Burning Ordinance, adopted by Ordinance 06-1221) and the adopted International Fire Code amendments in Title 10, Chapter 4, all open burning is prohibited except for narrow exceptions. The city specifically prohibits use of burn barrels, agricultural burning, and residential outdoor burning of rubbish, household waste, leaves, yard trimmings, or gardening waste. A long list of materials may never be burned, including treated wood, plastics, rubber, tires, garbage, construction and trade waste, oil, paints, and dead animals. The adopted Fire Code (IFC 307.6) confirms burn barrels are prohibited and that prohibited materials include yard waste and grass clippings. Certain fires may be allowed only by permit from the fire chief, such as weed-control burns of irrigation ditches and fence rows (permitted only between 8:00 AM and sunset). All open burning is banned when the air quality index reaches 60 or higher for any pollutant, during a red flag weather warning, or when winds reach 10 mph or greater. Open burning hours are limited to 8:00 AM to sunset, except recreational fires. Violations are misdemeanors.
Open burning in violation of Title 5, Chapter 2 or the Fire Code is a misdemeanor; each day is a separate offense. Burn barrels, residential trash/yard-waste burning, and burning prohibited materials are specifically banned.
