North Las Vegas, NV Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

Smoke and carbon monoxide detector requirements in North Las Vegas follow the 2018 International Residential Code and International Fire Code as adopted by NLVMC Title 15. All dwellings must have smoke alarms installed inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway serving bedrooms), and on every level of the home including basements. In new construction and substantial remodels, alarms must be hardwired with battery backup and interconnected so one activation sounds all alarms. Existing homes are typically grandfathered with battery-only alarms as long as they function and are replaced every 10 years. Carbon monoxide alarms are required near sleeping areas in any dwelling with a fuel-burning appliance (gas furnace, gas water heater, gas range, fireplace) or with an attached garage, per the 2018 IRC/IFC. Landlords must provide working smoke and CO alarms at the start of every tenancy under Nevada NRS 118A.380. Rental inspections enforce this during the NLV business license process. Combination smoke/CO alarms are permitted. Alarms should be replaced every 10 years regardless of battery status.
